Phantastes was composed for Alison Edwards, professor of piano at California State University Fullerton, who introduced the work on 14 January 2009 in a recital for the Orange County Branch of the Music Teachers’ Association of California. In a review of the performance, the President of the branch wrote: “The enjoyment of Alison's intriguing program of Fantasias for piano was enhanced by her lecture accompanying the recital. Her playing was consistently vibrant, dramatic and technically brilliant, and she extracted a beautiful alluring tone quality from the piano. The final piece on her program was Phantastes, a magnificent piano composition written for Alison by the prominent composer J.A.C. Redford. Before Alison’s performance, Mr. Redford gave us an analysis of his piece. While his remarks were insightful and interesting, this piece is so evocative that his words were ‘icing on the cake.’”
